Attorneys File UN Petition Seeking Reza's Urgent Release

On January 20, 2026, attorneys filed a petition with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

Free Reza Valizadeh

Reza Valizadeh, a journalist and dual U.S. Iranian national, is currently wrongfully detained in Evin Prison in Tehran, Iran, a detention facility notorious for housing political prisoners, journalists, and human rights activists under inhumane and degrading conditions.  In September 2024, after being coerced into returning to Iran under pressure to protect his family, Reza was arrested by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. Following a politically motivated show trial that violated fundamental due process standards, Reza was sentenced to 10 years in prison on the vague and unsubstantiated charge of “collaboration with a hostile government.”

The Iranian regime arrested and imprisoned Reza in direct retaliation for his decades of fearless journalism that exposed corruption and challenged its legitimacy.  Recognizing the political nature of his detention, the U.S. State Department has officially designated Reza as wrongfully detained.  We are committed to bringing attention to Reza’s case, not only to secure his release, but to send an unequivocal message that the unlawful imprisonment of U.S. citizens will not be tolerated.
